What is Bowspring?

Revolutionary postural practice that focuses on:

Posture, Movement, Breathing: Body

Will / Determination, Focus: Mind

Responsibility, Mindfulness, Compassion: Heart

It is a postural template that can be universally applied to any yoga pose, movement, or any functional posture for optimal performance. The Bowspring lineup is tailored for people of all ages. This powerful posture template converts the most common daily sitting or standing positions, static and heavy postures, into positions of light, full of dynamism and fluidity in life.

Bowspring is an ergonomic posture that targets 10 key areas of your body. The algorithm is in charge of activating all the key areas in a harmonic movement. Helps create a balanced tone throughout your body, front and back of your body. Unlike the traditional “straight” postural alignment model, Bowspring encourages the body’s natural state: primitive, wavy or curvy.

Instead of a static position in which the connective tissue forms passively at rest, the Bowspring alignment positions the connective tissue (myofascia) to participate evenly on all sides of the body in front and behind, and on both sides, with fluid movements with the minimum amount of force.

This dynamic alignment is also a revolution out of our comfortable sedentary lifestyle, which we spend a lot of time mostly sitting in a relaxed posture at work at our desks, staring at a screen.

With today’s lifestyle we have gotten out of tune with our natural dynamic posture. Our modern misaligned shape desensitizes us and diminishes our ability to feel and think clearly. The Bowspring system is a revolutionary new movement that brings us back again to embody a natural curvy posture.

The Bowspring works in a soft, subtle and deep way with specific actions, achieving a delicious synergy between the 10 main areas of our body. The open forms that they generate by acting on those 10 main areas cleanse and heal at all levels. Those 10 areas are organized into 5 subsystems:

Heart (rib cage).

Wings (shoulders, arms and hands)

Roots (hips, legs and feet)

Waist or trunk (abdomen and lower back)

Crown (neck and head).

Each part is structural and is interconnected in our body through a unique fascial sheath that wraps the whole generating and sustaining the form. If one part is not activated well, the whole cannot function optimally. All parties are interdependent.

Bowspring elicits graceful fluidity, wavy curves, increased confidence, and self-awareness of somatic and psycho-emotional patterns. Therefore, it helps us to become more aware of our patterns both on the external or physical plane (about the default posture to which we are accustomed) and on the internal plane.

Bowspring’s philosophical vision is based on three main pillars:

Responsibility: remembering that each person is responsible for their thoughts and actions, as well as the acceptance of how the physical body is.
Mindfulness: learning to have a state of contemplation, while doing the dynamic practice, leaving the thoughts in a state of latency, to perceive all the sensations of the practice.
Compassion: being more considerate and compassionate with yourself and with your community, also with the suffering suffered by many living beings in your environment and in the world.

Origin and emergence of Bowspring.

Desi Springer is a co-founder of the Bowspring Method, a paradigm-shifting postural system that optimizes the health of the mind and body. Desi often refers to Bowspring’s practice as movement medicine, as well as a 21st century technology for awakening.

Desi Springer had studied yoga intensively for 14 years – 6 years at Bikram Yoga and 8 years at Anusara yoga, in 2012 he applied his curvy alignment ideas to a new sequence of curvy poses called Roots.

In the last 7 years, Desi has delivered more than 170 Bowspring trainings and workshops in 19 countries. He ran a major yoga studio in Denver, Colorado, with his sister, Micah, for 19 years. Desi is also a consultant for Vital Root, a no-waste vegetarian restaurant in Denver that specializes in SLO – Fast Food (Sustainable, Local, Organic Food Movement). Desi’s passions include gardening, nature, animals, healing through food, and mind-body disciplines. She dedicates her life to increasing harmony and health worldwide.

John Friend has taught yoga for 39 years, presenting more than 800 yoga seminars in more than 30 countries to tens of thousands of students. He created Anusara yoga in 1997, which is one of the leading modern postural yoga systems in the world.

John is considered one of the most influential yoga teachers of the early 21st century. He constantly explores the function of the energy potential of the human body and helped many people to recognize their inner strength by doing yoga. When John Friend realized that Desi Springer’s Bowspring model contradicted his Anusara alignment system in many ways. However, after applying Desi’s alignment ideas to her chronic hip injury, John’s painful hip problem began to clear up.

In 2012, John began studying Desi Springer’s new alignment ideas, which were in contradiction to his Anusara alignment principles. Backed by emerging science in the field of fascia and its role in optimal posture and functional movement, John and Desi jointly created the Bowspring Method in 2013 to help people around the world bring their health to a higher level. new level by using a wavy, balanced, dynamic posture in your daily life. John loves sharing his many years of studying philosophy and health of mind and body with independent thinking students. John currently lives in Denver, Colorado and teaches Bowspring trainings with Desi Springer around the world.

John researched and practiced Desi alignment ideas for 8 months before embracing his Bowspring concept in early 2013. From then until today, they continue to teach workshops and seminars around the world, expanding their knowledge, wisdom and love of this new postural alignment. In May 2015 JoanRamon Prats discovered Bowspring, through its creators Desi Springer and John Friend in a workshop in Mallorca and since then he also began to question everything he had learned, in the yoga alignments, he felt an internal revolution, the changes began in his physical body and changes from the heart, from then until today he has followed them in various intensive courses and seminars in Spain, Europe and the United States.

What are the main difficulties we can expect when we start Bowspring practice?

Although the system is designed to be easily understood by students of any level, Sridaiva is not easy to practice at first.

The main difficulties that we can expect at the beginning of the practice are:

  1. The Bowspring offers an energetic opening.
The practice of the Bowspring of Sridaiva can provide you with an emotional cleansing that can make you clear old psychosomatic patterns that are stored in the cellular memory. Sridaiva’s dynamic postural forms address the unconscious postural patterns of protection, pain reduction, and decreased sensory capacity. Areas of the body-mind that are normally closed include 5 specific zones: the lower part (the pelvic floor), the adbomen (the solar plexus), the armpits (heart), under the chin (throat), under the palate ( mouth). The reprogramming of these areas can be experienced somatically accompanied by strange and emotionally uncomfortable sensations.
  2. It takes practice to learn the Bowspring and create the mind-body-heart connection in specific parts of the body such as the toes and fingers. The Bowspring system requires conscious toning of all muscles in the back of the body including upward activation of the glutes that very few students can consistently perform at first.
  3. Bowspring alignment does not follow standard optimal posture pattern. The key alignment instructions in Sridaiva are very different and often the opposite of what is usually taught in other schools of modern postural yoga, classical dance, or other postural alignment systems. Sridaiva challenges the student’s mind to be open to trying something avant-garde and alternative in her body with the promise of greater vibrational capacity and successful progress.
